Over the next four months, I will introduce you to the eight women in this book: Emily Quiner, Annie Cox, Ann Waldo, Susan Brown, Sarah Powers, Margaret Patchin, Mary Burwell, and Belle Arnold Sleeper. Each of these ordinary Wisconsin women impacted and were impacted by the Civil War.

I am pleased to be able to share their stories of the Civil War with you. During my almost five years of reading their journals and letters, I grew to admire and cherish these women. I hope that my introductions of these women over the next four months will lead you to also appreciate these women and the contributions that they and countless other women on the home front made during the American Civil War.
